In January 2015 SamKnows was awarded a contract by the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to begin a new project researching and collecting accurate data on fixed-line broadband speeds.

The project was the first of its kind ever to be undertaken in Canada, and a collaborative working group was formed consisting of the major Internet Services Providers (ISPs) to help get the project off the ground.

Work has now begun on recruiting a panel of consumer volunteers, in conjunction with participating ISPs, to install a small SamKnows Whitebox device in each of their homes. The Whitebox automatically monitors volunteers' connection speeds whilst still maintaining the privacy and security of the consumer. The data from the SamKnows Whiteboxes is then collated, with the first of a series of reports due to be published early in 2016.

We hope the project will continue to grow and developing and, thanks to the considerable efforts of all the ISPs and our volunteers, we hope to continue testing and improving the state of broadband in Canada.
